The lane is being closing to allow grinding paving the stretch of the highway where the asphalt is cracked and lifting, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
The closures are planned from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. starting Monday, Sept. 19 and continuing through Friday Sept. 23.
Dave Chesson, WSDOT spokesman, said several reasons factored into the decision to repair the stretch of highway during the busy daytime hours rather at night. First, the area of Highway 20 around Deception Pass is very dark at night and it would be difficult to work and the company supplying the asphalt for such a small project isn’t open at night.
Motorists should expect delays of 30 minutes or longer during construction times.
Electronic message boards will be in place to alert drivers to the construction times. WSDOT advises motorists to alter their travel times to avoid the delays.
Next week’s repaving project is weather dependent and work will be rescheduled if it rains.
